Light Pillars

These are whats commonly called light pillars. They are said to occur due to light reflecting from ice crystals. But Since light is also part of the electromagnetic spectrum, maybe something else is happening here?

You know sunlight can go through glass, paper and leaves, but it cannot go through wood, rock and iron, but the magnets can go through everything.
